Why responsible business is the future of fashion

At Son of a Tailor, we believe that business should be a force for good. That’s why we became a B Corp in 2022, committing ourselves to balancing profit with purpose.

This year, we’ve taken that commitment even further. Following our first recertification — which takes place every three years — we’re proud to announce that we’ve not only maintained our B Corp status, but received a verified B Impact Score of 120.1 — significantly above the 80-point threshold.

A higher score — and a higher bar

What makes this milestone even more meaningful is that it reflects a significant transformation in how we operate. In 2023, we opened our own production facility in Portugal: SON Supply. For this latest recertification, our vertically integrated operations were assessed under B Corp’s Manufacturing standards — a more rigorous category than our original Retail/Wholesale designation.

Despite this shift, we achieved a higher score. It shows how bringing production in-house has helped us improve traceability and accountability, which are key areas reflected in our score. It gives us greater control, higher traceability, and the ability to improve every detail: from resource use to working conditions.

As most fashion brands continue to keep manufacturing at arm’s length, we believe it’s time this becomes the norm, not the exception.

The traditional model is broken

Fashion has long been built on a model of overproduction and unsustainable growth. The consequences? Excess inventory, exploitative labor practices, and a staggering environmental footprint are a stark reality. The industry contributes to 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions, more than international aviation and shipping combined. Meanwhile, 87% of textiles end up incinerated or in landfills.

But beyond these environmental costs, the traditional model is proving economically unsustainable. Consumers are demanding transparency, accountability, and better business practices. Brands that ignore this shift risk losing relevance in a marketplace where responsibility is no longer a niche concern — it’s the baseline.

Commitment beyond certification

Our B Corp certification is not a finish line — it’s a benchmark for continuous progress. From our made-to-order model that reduces waste, to investments in circularity and traceable supply chains, we continue to challenge ourselves to do better.

Bringing SON Supply into the certification process is a clear example of that ambition. Rather than outsourcing our most complex challenges, we’ve brought them closer — and taken responsibility for solving them ourselves.

“The companies that take action today will thrive tomorrow.”

The business case for resilience

There’s a misconception that responsibility and profitability are at odds. The reality is the opposite: businesses that embed ethical practices at their core are more resilient, more trusted, and more future-proof.

From the EU’s upcoming Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation to shifting investor priorities, the direction of travel is clear: responsible business is better business. Companies that delay will face more than just regulatory friction — they’ll risk losing credibility among a generation of customers who expect more.

The future of fashion is responsibility

The fashion industry has always competed on style, price, and innovation. Now, it must also compete on responsibility.

At Son of a Tailor, we’re not perfect — but we’re committed. To building better products. To treating people with respect. And to doing business in a way that’s accountable, transparent, and sustainable by design.

Your choices make this possible. Every Son of a Tailor garment supports fair working conditions, reduces overproduction, and prioritizes quality over quantity. As we move forward as a recertified B Corp, we simply want to say: thank you for being part of the journey.
